![]() ![]() Through these stories, the book not only documents our history and industry but also reminds us of all that makes our city what it is today. For Dorpat, it’s always about the story, which helps bring the past alive. In 100 such pairings, the book celebrates the topographical and architectural changes over almost 170 years of Seattle history as it tells our city’s stories. However, as intended, they serve as a helpful guide to unlock the past. The “Now” photos are beautifully composed by Dorpat’s more recent sidekick, photographer Jean Sherrard, but they take a back seat to the rich detail and almost exotic imagery of the “Then” photos. The book follows a familiar format first introduced in his long-running Seattle Times column: show a historic photo paired with a recent image that attempts to recreate the same view from the same location. Readers of the new book, Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred (Documentary Media, 244 pages, $49.95) will see the culmination of a lifetime of work by author Paul Dorpat. So whose memory is correct? Was I mean to him and he’s forgotten? Was I only ever mean to him in my head or behind his back? The answer is unknowable. ![]() In fact, he thought of me as a mentor and someone he admired. His response was one of total surprise and bewilderment because as he recalls I was nothing but friendly and helpful towards him. I wrote him a long message apologizing for my inexcusable behaviour in the past. When I received his message I was overcome with guilt recalling the way I treated him. I now recognize I did this in order to boost my own self confidence and try to impress other people as I felt so insecure myself. I have memories of being quite nasty and bullying (verbally, definitely not physically) towards him in the way kids act when they've been bullied themselves. I’m not so familiar with the 1995 version of ‘Persuasion’ as I am with the 2007 version. But it’s amazing to think back then that DVDs were still in their infancy in 1999 and that it’d take a while for them to really catch on before becoming popular until Blu-ray arrived.
